Chapter 37: Peace offering.
We arrived in Huntsville the next day by nine in the
morning. I went to sleep in my old room
while James went straight to his office to get what information he could. George was sitting in a chair in the living
room watching TV when I finally got out of bed around two in the afternoon.
“What are you doing here George?”
“James called to let me know you guys were
back. He thought it prudent, under the
circumstances, that someone be here to watch over you while he was out,” he said
matter of factly.
“I see.” I sat across from him.
“Should I call him for you or are you going to
do that?” he questioned watching my reaction.
I lowered my eyes.
“I don’t think I should see him right now.” I whispered looking at my hands. I could feel my heart squeezing tightly in my
chest again, so I wrapped my arms around my stomach and leaned forward, trying
to breathe evenly. My heart was aching
as I concentrated on my breathing.
“Anna, don’t blame him. Sasha knew exactly what she was doing. She saw how he feels about you and she is an
extremely jealous creature. She’s
annoyed that you captured his heart and she did whatever she could to cause
confusion between the two of you. The
fight that occurred after you took off was impressive. I have never seen Alex fight like that before! He took out a couple of good sized pieces of
her before we could stop him. She won’t
be bothering us anymore,” he laughed.
I smiled weakly at him. It did make me feel a bit better to hear that
Alex had gotten so angry at Sasha, but I was still really hurt.
There was a knock on the door. George stiffened and growled as he flew to
the door so that he was between me and whatever was on the other side. I heard a hiss of frustration outside the door
and I looked at George with my eyebrow raised in question.
“Sasha,” he growled menacingly.
“I come in peace,” said a French accented
voice.
“Open the door George,” I said quietly as I
placed a hand reassuringly on his shoulder.
Sasha stood there, quiet and composed, and George motioned her to enter
even as he scowled at her. She glided elegantly
into the room and sat down in a chair across from me. She openly looked me over again and again like
she was trying to understand something.
She finally sighed, and crossed her arms over her chest and regarded me
evenly.
“I don’t understand vat your draw ees for’im.”
she said melodically.
“What do you want Sasha?” I demanded, trying to
stay calm.
“I just vant to talk to you,” she answered in
what sounded like a sincere tone of voice.
“Then talk. I have things to do.” I looked at her coldly.
“Alone,” she stated her clear aqua marine eyes
darting to George and then back to me.
“No.
George stays. I don’t trust you.”
There was no room for compromise in my
statement and she didn’t push either. She
knew that George would kill her if she tried to harm me in any way.
“I understand.
I apologise for my be-aviour za ozza day. I am very used to getting vat I vant. ‘Owever, I came ‘ere to tell you zat your Pere
and ‘iz family are looking for your veakness.
I vill not tell zem zat Alex ‘ees zat veakness. I am returning to France now and I vanted you
to ‘ear zis from me. I do like Alex, but
I do not love ‘im. ‘Ee vas a good distraction
but nuzzing more to me. I vill not be a part
of zis silliness and I do not believe in za silly stories of your family.” She looked at me appraisingly and continued.
“Bevare your Perer child. ‘Ee is ruthless and ‘ee vill do anyzing and I
mean anyzing. I believe ‘ee already keeled
your petite ami from school.” She looked at me seriously as I nodded my
agreement.
“Sasha, I have to ask, why are you helping me?”
I asked confused.
“Alex ‘ees dear to me even zo I do not love ‘im.
I don’t vant to zee ‘im hurt. ‘Ee has made ‘ees choice and ‘ee vill not
concede. Zat ees our nature you
see. Vonce vone of our kind truly falls een
love vith somevone it changes us completely.
I ‘ope someday to find zat.” she smiled wistfully.
“Thank you for telling me,”I said quietly.
“You vill not see me again. Take care of ‘im, Anna, I ‘ope you deserve za
love ‘ee ‘as for you.” She rose elegantly, nodded to George and then left as
suddenly as she had apperared.
I stared after her in shock as George came to my side and put a hand on
my shoulder. I looked at him in disbelief,
willing him to make some sense of what I had just heard.
“Yes, it is that way for us,” he admitted.
Wow, what a day it had been and I still needed
to see Alex and the others. I looked at George
and nodded giving him my permission to make the call.
He
called Alex and told him we were at James’ place. Then George sat down and put an arm around my
shoulders in support. He knew that I was
reeling inside and my emotions were starting to get the better of me. George handed me a tissue so that I could
wipe my eyes before Alex arrived, I realized that my efforts were in vain.. I hadn’t realized that I was crying until
that moment. I sighed and went into the
bathroom to splash water on my face and compose myself. When I returned, George
was looking out the window deep in thought.
Alex arrived ten minutes later. His hair was windblown from running and he
looked absolutely exhausted. I knew that
he could stay up if he needed to, but he looked completely drained and
vulnerable.
“Do you want me to stay Anna?” George asked
quietly as Alex entered the house.
“I think I can handle it,” I replied looking at
him bravely. “Can you find out when the
funeral is? If I’m going to go, we need
to set up some plans because I bet my father will be there.” I risked a glance
at Alex as he stood just inside the door, which confirmed how exhausted he
appeared.
“I’ll let you know. Will you be coming to the house tonight?” George
asked, winking at me. I shook my head
and gave George a half smile.
“We’ll see.”
He smiled back at me then turned to Alex, “You better make this good
Alex. I miss her too.” Alex sighed and looked dejectedly at his
feet. I realized this wasn’t easy for
him either, so I played hostess.
“Have a seat Alex. Can I get you something?” I asked as George
left for home.
“No I’m good,” he replied quietly and sat
down. He wouldn’t look into my eyes and
just kept looking at the floor. I could
see the sadness all over him and my heart broke again. I didn’t know if my heart could handle any
more stress. I sighed as I tried to
think of something to say and lessen the tension in the room. I wanted nothing more than to just throw my
arms around him and hold him close, but that would not be the right thing to do
we needed to talk first.
“Alex, you don’t look so good. You need to take care of yourself. I need you Alex, I need you to be here for me.”
I looked at him concern etched across my face.
He finally looked at me, his eyes full of confusion and wonder.
“You’re not yelling at me, telling me off.”
“No, I don’t have a reason to yell at you. As for telling you off, James and George
explained things, but then Sasha was here an hour ago and she really cleared
things up.” His eyes widened when he heard what I said.
“She was here? Here!” His anger flared, his
eyes went wild with rage and he growled violently. I leaned back in my chair, eyes wide as I
stared at him in shock. I had never seen
him like this before, he was absolutely terrifying.
“Alex,” I said slowly raising my hands in front
of me. “She’s not here, she left. Said she was going back to France. We are alone.
Please calm down.” I looked at him somewhat frightened at his reaction.
He looked at me and realized that I was scared. He took a deep breath and looked away from
me, closing his eyes as he fought to gain control. After a minute he took a deep breath and
faced me again.
“I’m sorry, Anna. I didn’t mean to frighten you. Sasha tried to ruin the one thing I’ve been
searching for these past hundred years. YOU! And she almost succeeded. When I heard Cassy scream your name, I
realized what she had done and I almost ripped her apart because of what she
did to us. She used her abilities on me to find out what
your weaknesses are. She had no idea
what she was involved in.” he blurted.
Alex was ranting and I let him continue so he could get everything out.
“When Lizzy explained things to Sasha she told
Lizzy and I everything. Your father’s family
hired Sasha because they knew a vampire family lived in the area, and Sasha
knew us. They wanted to know if we knew
anything. She told them that we knew you
and that we would not tolerate any interference from them. We couldn’t get anything else out of
her. Why did she come here?” he asked looking
at me intently. His eyes were softer,
not their usual swirling emerald green but close.
“She came to tell me that she was sorry. She told me she did not want to be involved
in this mess, and she didn’t want them to know that YOU are my weakness.” I
looked meaningfully into his eyes as I leaned forward and gently touched his
cheek.
“You forgive me,” he stated in wonder, his eyes
searching mine.
“You were not at fault. She was. It may take me
some time to get over the image of the two of you kissing and you responding to
her, especially in the garden. I don’t
think I’ll be able to go there for a while. We’ll just have to take it one day
at a time, okay?” I spoke softly, butterflies stirring in my stomach as I
looked into his hopeful eyes.
He nodded. “I wish I knew a way to make it up to you.” I could see the
sadness creeping back into his eyes.
“Alex, don’t worry, we’ll figure it out,” I
said softly.
“Let’s go for a walk, Anna.” Alex stood up and
held out his hand invitingly. I smiled
up at him and took his hand taking comfort in the feeling of peace it gave me.
We walked down to the water’s edge without
saying anything. He put an arm around my
shoulders and pulled me a little closer to him.
I was enjoying being close to him again.
It just felt right. We were
standing together looking out at the serene landscape listening to the water
lapping at the shoreline.
“I’m glad you are back Anna, I really missed
you,” he said quietly.
“I missed you too, Alex; it hurt just to think
of you. I felt like my heart was tearing
to pieces.” I could feel the tears starting again, as my throat tightened. Alex didn’t reply, he just wrapped his arms
around me and crushed my back to his chest, burying his head in my neck. I could feel his tears, hot against my skin
and my own tears streamed freely down my cheeks as I clung to his arms. We stayed that way until James came home.
“I see that the two of you have worked things
out,” James smiled as he walked towards us.
“We’re working on it,” Alex replied.
“Are you going stay here Anna, or move back
with Alex?” James asked looking at me with fatherly concern. I could tell he wanted me to feel safe and he
hated it when I was hurting.
Alex tightened his arms around me.
They were like a steel cage, but it made me feel safe and loved and I knew
he wouldn’t let go. It was true, I did
feel safe in his arms, and no matter what else had happened, he was the only
one I wanted to be with.
“I think I’ll go home with Alex. I’m pretty sure he won’t let go.” I smiled up
at James.
Alex rested his cheek on my hair.
James smiled at us and walked back up to the house.
I sighed happily and turning to face Alex I let myself melt into his
strong chest, snuggling as close as I could as I inhaled his familiar scent.
“Shall we go?” he whispered into my ear. Reluctantly I pulled a little away from Alex
so I could look him in the eyes.
“I need to talk to James first, but yes, I’d
like to go home. I miss Lizzy and the
others.” I smiled happily at him. He
slowly unwound his arms and took my hand as we walked towards house. I couldn’t believe how much better I felt
being with Alex. Having hi near me just
made me feel whole again. I looked at
Alex and knew he felt the same. We were meant
to be together. It felt wrong being away
from him, it made me feel empty. If being
apart for a week felt like this I don’t think I could ever handle being apart
from him again.
James was sitting in the living room watching TV
when we entered the house. The news was
on and the current weather was being broadcasted.
“Are you kids leaving?” James asked looking
over his shoulder at us.
“Not yet. I wanted to ask you about Jeff’s death,” I
replied. James sighed and nodded, rising
from his seat to look out the window. I
knew he didn’t want to upset me, but James also knew that I needed to know what
happened.
“It looked like Jeff was shot. He had drugs in his possession, so it could
be anything at the moment. The drugs
could have been planted on him to throw us off; I’m working on it,” he said
quietly.
“I hope you find the person who did this. Jeff was short sighted and a fool, but he was
just a kid,” Alex said.
“Jeff was kid, and so am I. He was immature, yes, but he didn’t deserve
to die like that,” I looked at them in frustration. “Besides, Sasha told me my father arranged
his death.” I stared at James who recognized my anger and frustration.
“Anna, I know he was a classmate and that he
had a crush on you, and yes, you are right, no one deserves to die like that. But are you sure Sasha was telling the truth?”
James asked evenly.
“Well, George didn’t think she was lying. But who knows if we’ll be able to trace the
murder to my father anyway,” I said, rather annoyed. James nodded and looked at his watch.
“Are you planning on going to the funeral?”
James asked gently.
“Yes. George said he would find out when the funeral
would be so that I could go. Why?” I asked,
knowing he was mulling something over.
“I spoke with Jeff’s family today. They told me they would have a memorial later
on, but the funeral was closed; family only,” James answered watching my
expression. I looked at James is
disbelief.
“Why would they do that? He has a lot of friends, they would want to
be there to pay their respects.”
“It’s their choice Anna. This is what they want, and we need to
respect their wishes.”
I sighed. “Yeah, you’re right.” I looked out the window frustrated by
the news. “I guess we’ll wait for the memorial.”
“I know you want to pay your respects, Anna,
and you’ll be able to do that at the memorial service. They haven’t decided when that will be but
I’m sure they will let everyone know soon,” James assured me. I smiled weakly.
“What’s really on your mind Anna?” James eyed
me suspiciously. He always knew when I
was mulling something over in my head. I
sighed, he knew me too well.
“I was wondering if this was my fault again. Did I get him killed just because he knew me,
and got involved with the wrong people like Paul did?” I gazed sadly at James
and Alex as they exchanged glances.
“Anna, we can’t know that. You can’t feel guilty: you didn’t pull the
trigger. Jeff made a bad decision and
unfortunately he paid a very high price for that choice. You are not to blame, but I believe what you’re
really worried about is how much risk is everyone else in. That depends on whether or not your father is
willing to go on a killing spree to get to you.
I don’t think he would do that because he is the type who likes to keep
a low profile. Remember, your father may
not be responsible for Jeff’s death either.” James explained. I looked at him sadly.
“I get that, but it’s just too close to home
and I don’t want anyone to get killed because of me or because they are
associated with me. I don’t want to lose
you, James. You are the first father figure I’ve ever had
and I like having you in my life. I’m so
worried about losing you. It would be
like losing my mother all over again and I can’t even imagine how horrible
losing the Worthingtons or Alex or Lizzy would be like. I already know that being away from Alex is
torture, and I miss Lizzy terribly. I
guess I’m feeling a bit crazy because July first is tomorrow and that means we
only have a month and a half before I have to get this sorted out.” I was very emotional, my love and concern for
everyone evident in my voice.
“We’ll figure it out. I’m sure it’ll work out the way we want,”
James said confidently.
“Not unless I can find that last portion of the legend. Stacy hinted at what it might be, but unless
we can find it we’ll be only guessing.” I sighed.
“What are you two talking about?” Alex asked,
confused.
“Sorry, I forgot I haven’t told you or any of
the others what we were up to. James and
I went to visit his friend, Jeff, at the Smithsonian Institute in
Washington. We were able to look at the
original manuscript with the Rising Starr legend and Jeff gave me a copy of the
original with the translation. Unfortunately,
the last line or few lines were torn out so we don’t know the full story, but
we have the majority of it. We then went
to New York and spoke to Stacy, my mom’s friend who I was staying with. She remembered seeing my mother with a piece
of paper that had all of this written down, but she doesn’t really remember
what it said. It was a long time ago, which
means that I might have the missing piece to the puzzle somewhere; I just have
to find it.” I smiled at Alex, my eyes dancing with excitement.
“You had a busy week,” he stated.
“Well, I wasn’t going to sulk like you
did. I did what I’m good at, running.” I smirked at him and he rolled his eyes my
comment.
Alex’s phone rang. “Yes Lizzy”
“Hang on I’ll ask her.”
He looked at me smiling, his eyes shining with the love he had for
me. The way he was looking at me made me
melt.
“Lizzy wants to know if you’re coming for
dinner.”
I looked at James and he nodded consent.
“Sure.” I smiled. I knew I was going to get an earful as soon
as I saw her.
“We’ll be there soon. Sure, no problem. Bye.” He ended the call and looked at James and I.
“I’ll drive you kids home,” James offered.
“Thanks.
Max wants to have a word with you,
anyway. He wants to go over plans with
you and George about the memorial and a few other things.” Alex looked at James,
his eyes full of wisdom that was older than he looked. I didn’t quite understand it; it was like he
was communicating more than what he was actually saying with his eyes, and only
James would understand. I shook my head
slowly and walked to my old room.
I wanted to get the letters my mother had
written to me to see if there was anything in them that might shed some light
on this mystery. I kept everything she
had ever left for me, including the keys which gave me an idea. Where was that key chain? It has to be here somewhere. I dug through the black back pack I wore to
New York. I opened the front pocket and
pulled out the key chain with the ominous saying ‘My life for you’ there
were 5 keys on the chain. I had only ever used two of them. One for the storage locker in New York with
the motorcycle and the strangely empty apartment when I ran from New Mexico to
New York. One key looked like a house
key but the other two looked odd and misshapen, not ordinary keys. What did they mean? What did they open?
Alex entered my room silently, as he always
did. He watched me for a few minutes
before he asked, “What is it Anna?” He watched me, but stayed guarded as he was
still unsure of what he should do.
“We might be going on another trip.” I held up
the keys to show Alex. He looked at me
confused.
“I’ll explain it later. I need to collect a few more things before we
go.” I said as I began moving around the room tossing envelops and a few other
things on the bed. When I stopped I surveyed
the small pile. There were four letters
from my mother, the keys, a map and the black backpack. I stuffed everything into the backpack and
headed back to the family room with Alex.
We left shortly after that for Alex’s. When we arrived at Alex’s house I
was so deep in thought that he had to tap my arm to bring me out of my
reverie. It was time to see Lizzy and
the others.
